After more than ten years, an Italian academic has returned to the prestigious United Nations Commission on International Law.<\/p>\n
With 152 votes Giuseppe Nesi, Professor of International Law at the University of Trento, has just been elected by the UN General Assembly in New York to the critical body of 34 jurists whose delicate task is the codification and development of International Law.<\/p>\n
It is a significant indicator of our country\u2019s reputation at the UN, given the very competitive and complex campaign in support of the national candidate carried out by the Italian diplomacy over the last three years.<\/p>\n
Professor Nesi is the fifth Italian academic elected to serve on the Commission in its nearly 70-year history.<\/p>\n
The International Law Commission was created in 1947. Italy has played a leading role in it, thanks to some of the most illustrious exponents of its internationalist schools, decisively contributing to the drafting some of the most effective legal instruments for the international community.<\/p>\n
Professor Nesi\u2019s mandate will run until 2027. In this period, crucial issues for international cooperation will have to be addressed, also from a legal standpoint, such as the impact of climate change, the rise in sea levels, sustainability issues, and the constant promotion of human rights.<\/p>\n
