On the occasion of United Nations Day, Italy wishes to reiterate its strong support for multilateralism, of which the UN, the only international organisation with a universal vocation, is the fundamental pillar.<\/p>\n
Covid-19 has proved a catalyst for fragility, further exacerbating the gravity of existing imbalances and the complexity of global challenges.<\/p>\n
The pandemic has thus made clear the opportunity to rebuild better, pursuing the goals of a ‘better recovery’ and a ‘new global deal’, in the words of Secretary-General Guterres.<\/p>\n
In this regard, Italy is committed to reform of the UN and, in particular, the Security Council, to ensure it becomes more democratic, transparent, representative, accountable and efficient.<\/p>\n
Italy is doing and will continue to do its part to ensure that the UN is increasingly attentive to the contributions of civil society, women and young people.<\/p>\n
Italy is the seventh largest contributor to the ordinary budget and to that of the United Nations peacekeeping operations, and the largest contributor of blue helmets among Western countries.<\/p>\n
This commitment stems from the centrality of multilateralism among the guidelines of Italy’s foreign policy. Believing and investing in the United Nations means acting with conviction to transform the principle of international solidarity into concrete actions.<\/p>\n
Today we stress the values of the UN Charter (peace, development and human rights) and reaffirm our commitment to promoting them on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
