The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, Giorgio Marrapodi, met today with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.<\/p>\n
The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of their collaboration, culminating in their joint work in the field of transforming sustainable food systems (UNFSS). Rome hosted the pre-summit on food systems in 2021; Ambassador Marrapodi contributed to its groundwork both as member of the UN Advisory Board and as coordinator of the national working group. The first follow-up meeting (\u201cStocktaking Moment\u201d) was also held in the Italian capital in 2023. In July of last year\u2014again in the presence of Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed\u2014Italy co-organized with Ethiopia in Addis Ababa the second summit assessing progress in global action on sustainable food systems.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Ambassador Marrapodi shared the date of the upcoming Conference on Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), that will take place on June 17 at the UN headquarters with a focus on \u201cDriving change and promoting coordinated action for sustainable development.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 2026 edition of the SDG 16 Conference is aimed, in particular, at facilitating effective partnerships and identifying practical pathways to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the Pact for the Future.<\/p>\n
Building on the results achieved in the previous six editions\u2014including the 2024 edition, which was attended by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella\u2014the SDG 16 Conference will provide an open platform for representatives of governments, local authorities, civil society, universities, and research centers to showcase concrete examples of the tangible results that action on SDG 16 produces for societal development.<\/p>\n
