This year\u2019s celebrations at the UN in New York marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic were marked by special excitement, with the participation of approximately 700 guests, including ambassadors and delegates from countries around the world, as well as UN and Italian officials at the United Nations.<\/p>\n
Permanent Representative Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi hosted the event and his opening remarks\u00a0 echoed the words of President Mattarella on the deep bond between the founding values of the Italian Republic and of the United Nations, and highlighted Italy\u2019s commitment across all areas of UN activity. Amb. Marrapodi also mentioned the participation of Italian soldiers in UN missions aimed to maintain international peace and security in high-risk contexts, Italy\u2019s 2026\u20132028 term on the Human Rights Council, and its contribution to initiatives promoting sustainable development, noting in this regard that Italy will host the Conference on Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, on June 17 in New York .<\/p>\n
Chief of Staff to the United Nations Secretary-GeneralCourtenay Rattray extended his congratulations on this important anniversary, along with words of deep appreciation for Italy\u2019s role in the UN.<\/p>\n
During the evening, the Music4D Orchestra, coordinated by the Palermo Conservatory, performed the Italian national anthem and excerpts from iconic soundtracks of Italian cinema. Two digital exhibitions highlighted the achievements of key female figures in Italian history: \u201cWomen of the Republic: 80 Years of Achievements in ANSA News Reports, 1946\u20132026\u201d and \u201cA Life for Sport: The Faces and Achievements of 100 Women Experts,\u201d the latter conceived and produced by the Bracco Foundation. Chefs and restaurateurs from renowned Italian food and wine companies operating in New York prepared special dishes to celebrate the inclusion of Italian cuisine on UNESCO\u2019s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the establishment, by consensus following an Italian initiative at the UN in 2025, of the International Day of the Mediterranean Diet.<\/p>\n
