Madam President, Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates,<\/p>\n
I am honoured to address this High-level Meeting on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Italy, Matteo Salvini.<\/p>\n
Italy aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union and wishes to add the following remarks in its national capacity.<\/p>\n
Let me first thank the President of the General Assembly for convening this High-level Meeting. I also thank the co-facilitators, Ambassador Aida Kasymalieva of the Kyrgyz Republic and Ambassador Peter Hul\u00e9nyi of the Slovak Republic, for their dedicated efforts in guiding the negotiations on the Progress Declaration. Let me also thank the Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr Jean Todt, for his tireless personal commitment.<\/p>\n
The goal of zero road victims is a priority for the Italian Government and recent figures show that we are moving in the right direction. According to the Italian Road Police, between December 2024 and December 2025 fatal accidents dropped by 7.2 per cent, deaths by 9 per cent and injuries by 2.1 per cent.<\/p>\n
This means one thousand fewer people injured and nearly one hundred lives saved.<\/p>\n
But we are well aware that the effort has only just begun.<\/p>\n
Since December 2024, our new Road Code has targeted the most serious causes of accidents, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as emerging ones, such as the use of mobile devices.<\/p>\n
We have introduced stricter rules for e-scooters and other micromobility vehicles.<\/p>\n
We are also investing in prevention: road safety education is now part of school curricula.<\/p>\n
Alongside regulation, Italy is investing in technology.<\/p>\n
Thanks to ANAS, our national road agency, we are building smart roads that use big data and artificial intelligence to make travel safer.<\/p>\n
Building on these efforts, we are now finalizing the National Road Safety Plan 2030.<\/p>\n
But our commitment extends beyond our borders. Under the auspices of Special Envoy Jean Todt, we are proud to have joined the campaign “Make a Safety Statement”, involving 80 countries and over 1,000 cities.<\/p>\n
We are also proud to count on the experience of Luciana Iorio, recently reconfirmed as Chair of the UNECE Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety.<\/p>\n
The targets we have set are ambitious, but they cannot be missed.<\/p>\n
This is why Italy fully supports the multi-sectoral approach of the Marrakech Declaration and of the new Progress Declaration.<\/p>\n
The commitment of all actors, from civil society to academia, from business to industry, is essential.<\/p>\n
