The 65th edition of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65) will be held from 15 to 26 March 2021.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Italian delegation to the CSW65 will be led by Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family, Elena Bonetti, who will be participating in the most salient events scheduled for the session\u2019s first week.<\/p>\n
The two priority themes of CSW65 are:
\u2022 \u201cWomen\u2019s full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls\u201d
\u2022 \u201cWomen\u2019s empowerment and the link to sustainable development\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister Bonetti will specifically speak at the first Ministerial Roundtable, scheduled for Monday, 15 March (9-10pm CET), entitled, \u201cGetting to Parity: Good Practices towards Achieving Women\u2019s Full and Effective Participation and Decision-Making in Public Life\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we face the global health crisis, we are called\u2013 as Minister Bonetti explains \u2013 to renew our commitment to the effective participation of women in decision-making processes. As we restart this journey we wish to embark upon, we need to follow two fundamental directions: the first is the preliminary halt of the spread of the virus; and the second \u2013 just as necessary – the opportunity to put women\u2019s full potential to work and allow them to contribute, on an equal footing with men, to building the future we want. Italy is currently engaged on both fronts \u2013 domestically and internationally. The direction given by Prime Minister Draghi is clear: women\u2019s empowerment is key to achieving true gender equality and the full participation of women in public life. Now is the time to take on this journey with commitment and vision.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Department for Equal Opportunities has also organized one of the two Italian side events, entitled: \u201cWomen\u2019s Empowerment at the UN and in the G20: Policies to Support Women\u2019s Leadership and Talent and to Fight Gender-based Violence (16 March, 6-7:30pm CET)<\/p>\n
In light of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and of the indications of the UN Secretary-General and the World Health Organization (WHO), CSW65 will be held in a hybrid format with a preponderance of video- conferencing.<\/p>\n
Many events will be open to the public with live streaming on the United Nations WebTV (webtv.un.org).<\/p>\n
CSW65 will also be fully broadcast via live streaming on its website and on social media channels of the Department for Equal Opportunities using the hashtag, #CSW65.<\/p>\n
The CSW is one of the functional commissions of ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Its main purpose is to draft reports and offer recommendations on the promotion of women\u2019s rights in the political, economic, social and educational fields.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1946, as a parallel body of the Commission on Human Rights, the CSW throughout the years has made an important contribution to the development of issues regarding equality and the human rights of women, as can be seen with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and its Optional Protocol.<\/p>\n
