Your Excellency, Mr. Sergio Mattarella; Mr. President of the General Assembly, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n
Sono lieto di unirmi al Presidente Francis nel dare il benvenuto al Presidente della Repubblica italiana, Signor Sergio Mattarella.<\/p>\n
La Repubblica italiana \u00e8 da tempo un convinto sostenitore delle Nazioni Unite e della cooperazione internazionale.<\/p>\n
Nel corso della sua ricca storia, l’Italia ha svolto un ruolo centrale nel facilitare il dialogo, promuovere la comprensione e forgiare la collaborazione tra popoli e nazioni.<\/p>\n
La sua posizione al centro del Mediterraneo le ha permesso di fungere da crocevia culturale, economico e diplomatico tra nord e sud.<\/p>\n
At the United Nations, Italy has consistently demonstrated its leadership in defending peace, human rights and sustainable development \u2013 hosting many UN bodies, and deploying its forces in peacekeeping missions.<\/p>\n
Today, these shared values are under threat.<\/p>\n
As our human family faces growing conflict, a climate crisis, growing inequalities, and disruptive technologies\u2026 one thing is clear: we are not prepared.<\/p>\n
The Security Council is often paralyzed by geopolitical divisions.<\/p>\n
The global financial architecture is outdated, dysfunctional and unjust.<\/p>\n
These institutions were created nearly 80 years ago, at a time when many Members of this General Assembly were under colonial rule.<\/p>\n
They do not represent today\u2019s world \u2013 and they cannot deal with today\u2019s new and emerging threats.<\/p>\n
We must come together to urgently reshape and strengthen our multilateral institutions.<\/p>\n
That means changing the composition and working methods of the United Nations Security Council to make it more inclusive and effective.<\/p>\n
And it means strengthening and reforming an outdated, dysfunctional and unfair\u00a0international financial architecture that has failed in its mission to provide a global safety net for developing countries, in particular for those drowning in debt.<\/p>\n
The Summit of the Future in September represents a unique opportunity to update these institutions for the 21st\u00a0century.<\/p>\n
On peace and security, the Summit must build on the New Agenda for Peace to boost our collective security systems, ensure better representation, and put prevention at the centre of our efforts.<\/p>\n
On sustainable development, we must make significant progress on a more inclusive global financial architecture that provides far more affordable long-term finance to countries in need and works for all.<\/p>\n
And we must bring the SDG Stimulus to life by mobilizing at least US $500 billion a year in financing for developing countries.<\/p>\n
On emerging technologies, the Global Digital Compact must provide solutions to close the digital divide and develop effective, human-rights based governance of Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Mr. President, Excellencies,<\/p>\n
Italy has consistently supported our reform efforts, advocating for a more inclusive, transparent, and effective United Nations.<\/p>\n
As discussions ahead of the Summit enter a key phase, Italy\u2019s voice is more necessary than ever to bridge divides, to build trust and to find solutions.<\/p>\n
Italy\u2019s priorities as G7 President \u2013 defense of the rules-based international system, dialogue with the global South and \u201chuman-centered\u201d AI governance \u2013 echo this vision.<\/p>\n
The G7 has a special responsibility to be at the forefront of the reform efforts to build a more equitable and effective multilateralism.<\/p>\n
I count on Italy\u2019s leadership of the G7 during this vital year to help steer developed countries into embracing these reforms.<\/p>\n
Dear President Sergio Mattarella,<\/p>\n
Your presence here today is a testament to the enduring friendship between Italy and the United Nations.<\/p>\n
Thank you for your leadership and for your unwavering dedication to a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future for all.<\/p>\n
