I want to thank the United Kingdom for organizing this meeting at the grim milestone of 1.000 days since Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

1.000 days of war is a tragic reminder of the need to remain resolute in ensuring that international law prevails, not just in Ukraine but wherever it is challenged. Italy remains committed to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, in line with the UN Charter, based on the principles of sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. We firmly believe that the full implementation of these principles is a matter not in the exclusive interest of Ukraine and Europe, but of the entire UN membership, since they are the foundations that hold the international community together.

These principles have been strongly evoked and reaffirmed by the G7 of Foreign Ministers meeting chaired by Italy in September, on the side of the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly. A clear message of support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty has been reiterated by the G7 Leaders’ statement issued to mark the thousandth day of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. In this regard, the G7 and Partners Foreign Ministers expressed grave concerns regarding the deployment of DPRK troops to Russia as well as Russia’s unlawful procurement of DPRK ballistic missiles in breach of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

We condemn Russia’s increased attacks on civilian critical infrastructures and reaffirm our support for Ukraine’s energy sector. Italy in particular is contributing to ensure Ukraine’s resilience providing, in addition to our bilateral aid, targeted financial support to the EBRD project for the Country’s hydro-electrical output. In 2025 we will host the Ukraine Recovery Conference: together we will lay the foundations for a prosperous independent Ukraine within our common European family.

We must now call for an even greater involvement of all UN Member States to contribute to the solution of this devastating, senseless war. We need diplomacy, also to sustain the legitimate concerns and expectations of developing countries, which are impacted by the broader repercussions of this conflict, in terms of disruptions to global supply chains and food security. We remain committed to collaborating with all partners ready to support peace efforts. Now is the time to intensify our collective efforts to achieve this goal.

Thank you.

Mister Chair, Italy fully aligns itself with the statement by the European Union and would like to add some considerations in its national capacity.
