According to the Secretary-General’s latest report, women accounted for only 5% of peace negotiators worldwide last year, down from 7% in 2024. We must strengthen women’s participation in peace processes and decision-making.

The protection of women and girls in conflict settings is equally urgent. The fourfold increase in conflict-related sexual violence since 2022 underlines the need for stronger prevention and accountability, alongside continued support for local women’s organizations.

Emerging technologies pose further challenges. Online harassment, technology-facilitated violence and disinformation can undermine women’s safe participation in public life. Their responsible and inclusive use must be supported by appropriate safeguards.

Italy translates its commitments into action through its Fifth National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security for 2025–2029, supporting projects by international and civil society organizations, particularly in post-conflict settings.

Italy also promotes women’s mediation through the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network, launched in 2017 and now comprising over 80 members. Our co-chairmanship, alongside the Philippines, of the Network of Focal Points on Women, Peace and Security further demonstrates our commitment to international cooperation and sharing good practices.

Madam/Mr. President,

Twenty-six years after the adoption of resolution 1325, we must turn our commitments into tangible progress in women’s participation, protection and access to justice. This requires stronger cooperation among Member States, international organizations and civil society.

If we are committed to peace, we must invest in women’s leadership and ensure that women can participate safely and equally in shaping it.

Thank you.

Mr.President Distinguished Delegates, I thank Greece for convening this timely debate on women’s rights, leadership and participation in peace and security.
