The Italian Government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has on many occasions, also in this room, stated our clear position on the Russia aggression on Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Italy stands with Ukraine with the goal of a just peace.<\/p>\n
We stand with an invaded people, fighting to defend their freedom and sovereignty.<\/p>\n
This is a key priority. At the United Nations, in the European Union, and as President of the G7 this year.<\/p>\n
Just in the last few days, here in New York I chaired two G7 meetings on Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Supporting the defense of Kiev is crucial.<\/p>\n
Protecting its infrastructures is vital.<\/p>\n
Our support is focused on the defense of Ukrainian territories.<\/p>\n
We are not at war with Russia, our goal is to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiation table for a just peace.<\/p>\n
We want to give time and space for peace to grow.<\/p>\n
I wish to express our full solidarity with the Ukrainian government and people for the current intense Russian attacks to the energy infrastructures.<\/p>\n
Winter is imminent. We are very concerned by the situation, and we reaffirm our support to Ukraine and its energy sector.<\/p>\n
International humanitarian law calls for the respect of the energy infrastructures.<\/p>\n
As I stated in our G7+ meeting on energy just yesterday, since the start of the war, Italy provided several hundred tons of materials, including generators.<\/p>\n
Italian Government, together with our companies, contributed with important donations.<\/p>\n
In February we signed an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on a 200 million euro project to restore the capacity of the main hydropower-generating Ukrainian company. We want to do more.<\/p>\n
Mr. President,<\/p>\n
Italy will host in 2025 the next Ukraine Recovery Conference.<\/p>\n
Our focus is on peace. We want to avoid escalatory spirals.<\/p>\n
In our view, the solution involves starting a political and diplomatic process.<\/p>\n
[With the presentation today of the new Victory Plan by President Zelensky, we have a window of opportunity for a diplomatic solution]<\/p>\n

Italy wants to do all it can, starting with the upcoming G7 Ministerial meeting I will host in Fiuggi in November, and the Mediterranean Dialogues scheduled in Rome, again in November.<\/p>\n
Every opportunity is important to work for a just peace.<\/p>\n
