Press Release - UN/Italy. Group of Friends leading on Environmental Management in the field of UN Operations. Results and perspectives after one year of activity

New York, 30 November 2018. Today, the Italian Permanent Mission to the United Nations has hostedthe Group of Friends Leading on environmental management in the field (LEAF) - co-chaired by Italy and Bangladesh-, at the end of its first year of activity. The meeting was attended by the UN Under-Secretary General for Logistics Support, Atul Khare, and by representatives of the 27 Member Countries. The Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN, Ambassador Mariangela Zappia, opened the meeting.

"The Group of Friends has worked intensively in this first year of activity, obtaining important results. Thanks to its awareness-raising action, the commitment to control and reduce the environmental impact of UN operations has also been reached at the political level in the framework of the "Action for Peacekeeping" declaration of shared commitments, promoted by the Secretary General, with which have been set standards to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of peacekeeping operations. It is an important acknowledgment of the importance of the environmental aspect for UN operations which are called upon every day on the ground to lead by example, and applying key principles of the 2030 Agenda such as respect for ecosystems and sustainability," Zappia said.

"We have taken stock of the achieved results and set the strategic guidelines for next year. Under-Secretary General Khare confirmed the importance of the Group's support for the implementation of the Department of Field Support's Environmental Strategy, especially in the framework of the UN reform coming into force on 1 January 2019. Italy, the first contributor of blue helmets among Western countries and one of the largest contributors to the peacekeeping budget, will continue to underscore the importance that the United Nations adopts a responsible approach in regard to the environmental footprint of its operations, encouraging, through the Group, a constant dialogue with the troops and police contributing Countries and drawing attention to the needs of the populations and Countries where the operations take place.
