75th UNGA - High-level meeting on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing+25

National Statement delivered by Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, at the UN High-level meeting on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing+25 ---

Mr. President of the General Assembly,

Excellencies,

25 years ago in Beijing leaders from all parts of the globe affirmed that the women’s rights are human rights, approving the most comprehensive, transformative global agenda for gender equality ever. Huge progress has been achieved since then and we must be proud of it. However, there is still much work to do to attain gender equality and women empowerment in our countries. In this unprecedented crisis, women played a vital role on the frontline of the fight against COVID-19. They did it as health workers, scientists and researchers, pillars of families and communities. For example, in Italy women researchers were the first to isolate COVID-19 virus. Yet women have been disproportionally affected by the pandemic. The socioeconomic consequences increase all the vulnerabilities that they are still exposed to.

Women and girls continue to be victims of an increased number of episodes of gender-based violence, in particular domestic violence. We should learn our lessons and turn this crisis into an opportunity to reshape our future in a more inclusive way. We need to step up our efforts to remove all the structural barriers women still face every day and to fight any form of discrimination and vulnerability throughout their life’s course.

Italy is fully committed to promoting greater participation of women in the response planning and decision-making processes. As an Italian outstanding woman Liliana Segre said, the female point of view is a precious good, which enriches our society, its image, its profile to all of possibilities and alternatives.

The adoption of gender sensitive measures to ensure a sustainable inclusive economic recovery from the pandemic will be key feature of the upcoming Italian G20 presidency in 2021. Only through women and girls’ full participation in all spheres of the society, indeed, we can achieve the Agenda 2030 goals and keep the promise of leaving no one behind.

Let’s do not waste this occasion. Let’s build back better.

Thank you very much.
