Nota Farnesina - Participation of Minister Di Maio in the Ministerial Meeting on Libya

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, participated today by videoconference in the high-level ministerial meeting on Libya, co-organised by the UN General Secretariat and Germany in the margins of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. The meeting, which was opened by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres followed by the German Minister Heiko Maas, was attended by representatives of the member and associated States of the so-called Berlin format, the regional organisations that are part of it and Libya's neighbouring countries.

During his speech, Minister Di Maio stressed the importance of the commitments made at the Berlin Conference and reiterated Italy's full support for an overall political solution to the Libyan crisis through intra-Libyan political dialogue, within the framework of the central action of the United Nations, and hoped that the institutional and political progress achieved in the Montreux talks in Switzerland and the ongoing talks in Bouznika, Morocco, could be consolidated at the next meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

In the light of recent talks in Hurghada between military and security representatives of the GAN and the LNA, Minister Di Maio also stressed the need to restart direct negotiations within the Joint 5 + 5 Military Committee to conclude a ceasefire agreement and establish a demilitarised zone in Sirte and Joufra and the resumption of oil production and export throughout Libya without time limits. Eventually, the Foreign Minister reiterated the need for a complete cessation of external interference in the conflict and military support to the Libyan parties.
