PRESS RELEASE

UN/ITALY: Official presentation of the letters of credentials to the Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by the new Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN in New York, Amb. Maurizio Massari

New York, August 17, 2021. The new Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, today officially presented his letters of credentials to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. During the ceremony and during the subsequent meeting with Guterres, held in an atmosphere of great cordiality, Ambassador Massari reiterated the will of the Italian Government to consolidate and further develop the already excellent partnership between Italy and the United Nations, leveraging on the important contribution traditionally made by our Country to the main sectors of activity of the Organization.

"Italy puts its dynamic and proactive action at the multilateral level in support of the work of the United Nations and will continue to do so with conviction," said Ambassador Massari, recalling the importance and the breadth of Italy's contribution to the United Nations, which substantiates in being the eighth largest contributor to the UN budget, the largest contributor among Western countries of blue helmets - in particular to UNIFIL - and hosting a considerable number of Agencies and facilities of the UN system, including the food hub in Rome (FAO, WFP, IFAD), the logistics center in Brindisi and the UN Staff College in Turin.

The Secretary-General expressed great appreciation for Italy's role in the main regional scenarios as well as for the G20 Italian Presidency and its focus on three interconnected pillars of action: People, Planet and Prosperity.

At the end, Ambassador Massari discussed the issues of main interest currently under discussion at the United Nations, focusing also on the substantial and operational aspects, still being defined, for the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly scheduled in September in New York.
