Press Release - UN/Italy. The Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN NY becomes single-use plastic-free space

New York, 23 September 2019. The Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York has become a "single-use plastic-free" space. The Mission thus eliminates disposable plastic and no longer allows it to be introduced to its premises. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio and the Minister of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea Sergio Costa.

"The Italian Mission to the UN in New York is among the first to ban single-use plastic. I am proud to announce it on the day that world leaders, Italy in the front row, gathered at the United Nations to relaunch global climate ambitions. The good practices adopted by the Italian public administration, of which the diplomatic-consular network represents a point of excellence, provide concrete evidence of our country's commitment to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change, "commented the Prime Minister congratulating all staff for the commitment shown.

Federica Gasbarro, spokesperson for Greta Thunberg's "Fridays for Future" movement in Italy, and Youth Delegate Federico Brocchieri, the two young people who took our country's flag to the Youth Summit on the Climate, were also present.

The initiative is part of the "Farnesina Verde" project promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to reduce the environmental footprint of the Farnesina and the diplomatic-consular network. With the official inauguration as a "single-use plastic-free" space, the Mission also joins the "Plastic-Free" campaign launched by the Ministry of the Environment.

Italy supports the campaign launched by the United Nations for eliminating the use of single-use plastic at the UN headquarters and for an overall reduction in the environmental impact of UN missions and activities on the ground, a line of action that Italy also promotes in the framework of the Group of Friends “Leading on environmental management in the field” (LEAF), established by Italy and Bangladesh in 2018.
