Videomessage by Ambassador Maurizio Massari

(In Italian) Innanzitutto, un caloroso benvenuto a tutta la comunità delle Nazioni Unite.

It is with pride and a sense of responsibility that I take on the role of Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations.

Italy is wholeheartedly committed to the fulfillment of UN goals in the areas of peace and international security, the promotion of sustainable development, the protection of HR.

These are objectives to which Italy actively contributes every day, through the commitment of our Government and institutions, the contribution of our Armed Forces to peace missions, the work of civil society organizations and of our private sector, the work of our officials and volunteers operating under the aegis of the United Nations, the engagement of our UN accredited journalists. To all I want to convey my warmest regards. I count on working with all of you as a team to further promote the influence and action of Italy at the UN.

I am beginning my mission in a decisive year. Our common task is to overcome the health crisis caused by the pandemic, to focus on an economic and social recovery based on resilience and a renewed commitment to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals. It is a context in which international cooperation and multilateralism, which are firmly anchored in our Constitution, are more than ever the most - I would say the only - effective tools to face today’s complex challenges. It is also a year in which Italy has taken on special commitments, through its G20 Presidency and the partnership with the United Kingdom in the preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), and its leading role in organizing the Food Systems Summit.

My task will be that of further strengthening the support of Italy for UN activities: we are the 7th top contributor to the UN’s regular budget and first Troop Contributing Country among Western states for peacekeeping operations. Italy hosts important UN agencies and offices, such as the agro-food hub comprising the FAO, IFAD and the WFP; the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Brindisi and others.

As of January 2022, Italy will also join the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2022-2024 triennium, thus leading the way toward the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Italy intends to continue, together with the entire European Union, to be an ever-closer and effective partner of the UN in the pursuit of its missions. To this end, a strong and united Europe is indispensable.

This is the mission I am honored to embark upon, together with all the Italian women and men, who have in every capacity committed themselves to the work of the United Nations and who are, every day on the ground, the concrete actors of multilateralism.

(In Italian) Sono quindi entusiasta e pronto a lavorare con tutti voi per affrontare insieme ogni giorno le numerose sfide comuni.
