Statement delivered by Ambassador Mariangela Zappia, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, at the Event "A SIDS Moment in December" to Commemorate the 30th Anniversary of AOSIS

Thank you Ambassador Young, thank you Lois for inviting me to the celebration of this 30th Anniversary of the Alliance of Small Island States. AOSIS has played an invaluable and advocacy role in engaging the international community on vital issues for the SIDS and for the entire planet.

Italy is a proud, longstanding partner of Small Island Development States. Together we have developed tens of projects combining adaptation, mitigation and preparedness for climate change with a focus on boosting sustainable growth. The partnership between Italy and AOSIS also aims at capacity building, through the ongoing and very successful Fellowship Programme. Full inclusion of women and youth in decision-making processes can make the difference in the way we tackle climate change and interact with the environment. Therefore, I am very pleased to see that 4 out of 5 AOSIS Fellows this year are young women.

The Covid pandemic has demonstrated how closely interrelated climate change, loss of biodiversity and socio-economic inequalities are, and the existential challenges that they pose to global health and sustainable development.

2021 will be a crucial year for a “green recovery”. As Italy takes on the Presidency of the G20, we will spare no effort to mobilize the international community on a a transformative agenda for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient world. Italy’s commitment to raising ambition on climate action is relentless. In line with the EU green Deal, we are determined to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and we will advocate for all parties to the Paris Agreement to increase their Nationally Determined Contributions to curb emissions substantially at the global level. We want the youth to have a say. I encourage young people from SIDS to continue to bring their energy and enthusiasm in our Youth4ClimateLive Series, in preparation of the Youth4Climate Summit and the pre-CoP26 in Milan in the end of September 2021.

All together, we can accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda having in mind the most vulnerable including the SIDS.

Happy Birthday, AOSIS!
