Mr. President,

Thank you very much.

Italy aligns itself with the statement made by the European Union and would like to add a few remarks from a national perspective.
We welcome and strongly support your priorities for the resumed 75th session of the General Assembly. The months ahead of us will be of crucial importance to overcome the pandemic, recover better and bring the 2030 Agenda back on track. To achieve these goals, we are called to collectively recommit to a strengthened and effective multilateralism, with the UN and this Assembly at its core.

Italy has recently assumed the Presidency of the G20 and is fully committed to promoting effective multilateral solutions to the current global challenges. Italy’s G20 Priorities on People, Planet and Prosperity reflect this vision and clearly align also with the priorities you presented today.

Next week, the Italian G20 Sherpa will brief the General Assembly on the main priorities of our G20 Presidency, which include: ensuring universal and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments; strengthening global health security and cooperation,; decisively accelerating the climate action and intensifying the protection of biodiversity and the environment; boosting socio-economic recovery and financing for sustainable development; delivering on key systemic transformations for SDGs implementation.
Women empowerment will also feature high in our G20 agenda. In that regard, we truly appreciate, Mr. President, your engagement in advancing women’s rights. ,

Mr. President,

We look forward to the continuation of the dialogue on the follow-up to the Political Declaration for the 75th Anniversary of the UN, and would welcome also the enriching participation of non-Government stakeholders, notably the youth, the private sector and civil society organizations. We trust that the results of this global conversation will continue to nurture our efforts towards a reformed and result-oriented multilateralism.

Mr. President,

Effective multilateralism depends on effective institutions.

In this vein, let me conclude by recalling the importance of the reforming the UN, including the Security Council. Italy is strongly committed to contribute with a positive attitude and in good faith to the intergovernmental negotiations which will start again next week. This is an extremely important discussion which should lead us towards a truly consensual reform to a vision of an enlarged Security Council which serves the interest of the whole membership and in this respect to we count, Mr. President, on your wise guidance.

I thank you very much.
