Today, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus the Resolution on the Olympic Truce regarding the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, a text facilitated by Italy as the host country of the games, in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee and the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation. This was announced by Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, at a joint press conference with the President of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, Giovanni Malagò, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kristy Coventry.
Ambassador Massari commented that: “The fact that the resolution was adopted by consensus of the General Assembly is extremely significant considering the current international scenario, which is unfortunately fraught with tension and conflict. It restores multilateralism’s credibility, because it has created convergence on a central issue, that of truce, peace, the cessation of conflict, and the principles and values that inspire our young athletes around the world.”
Ambassador Massari continued: “In particular, the adoption of the resolution by consensus of the General Assembly is an important success for Italy which results from coordinated, systemic, and widespread action carried out by the Italian government under the impetus of Foreign Minister Tajani, the diplomatic-consular network, and the Italian system as a whole.”
Ambassador Massari added: “I would also like to highlight the very high number of co-sponsors, 165, which further signals Italy’s ability to build the broad membership’s consensus on the issue of peace. On a personal note, I would like to highlight the extraordinary work of Italy’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, which has enabled us to achieve this remarkable milestone.”
The Ambassador also pointed out that during the negotiations on the text of the resolution, Italy was open to other perspectives and has always sought a compromise through open dialogue with all parties, without losing sight of Italy’s priorities and the identity of the Milan-Cortina Games, focused on promoting sport as a driver for peace and sustainable development, the importance of involving local communities, and on sustainability and gender equality.
