Thank you, Mr President,

Italy fully aligns with the statement delivered by the European Union and wishes to add some remarks on its national capacity.

This Assembly is once again convened today to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and to call for an end to this unjustified aggression by Russia.

After 4 years of war still no place is safe in Ukraine. Russian brutal attacks continue, a further stark breach of international law and of the UN Charter. This underscores the urgent need to support ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.

In this spirit, Italy co-sponsored and voted in favor of the Resolution “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine”. Another demonstration of my Country’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ceasefire and a just and lasting peace remain our main priorities. We thus strongly support the negotiations led by the United States. It is essential that all parties engage constructively in the search for a diplomatic solution.

The Italian Parliament passed a bill last week that provides further support to Kiev. In coordination with the EU and our partners, we will not waver in our assistance to Ukraine and its people.

Mister President,

We are profoundly concerned by the dire humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

The war has brought untold killing and suffering, caused global negative economic repercussions and sown instability in the region and beyond.

The human toll is unbearable. Thousands of civilians have been killed, among them too many children. Every child has the right to be safe, with their families, in their homeland at all times.

Too many civilian facilities, even in the health sector, have been damaged or destroyed. Millions of Ukrainians face freezing temperatures without electricity, heating, or water, as Russia intensifies attacks on critical infrastructure.

This tragedy must stop.

As the cornerstone for multilateral efforts, the United Nations has a unique role to play towards peace and security and humanitarian assistance. These objectives are not only in the interest of Ukraine and Europe, but of the entire UN membership.

In the context of ongoing diplomatic efforts, it is now crucial to bring four years of conflict to an end and pave the way to a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
