PRESS RELEASE – CSW65. MARCH 16, 2021. WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN THE GLOBAL AND G20 AGENDA.

New York, March 16, 2021. The Italian side event at CSW65 (Commission Status of Women) of the United Nations promoted by the Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family, Prof. Elena Bonetti, was held today.

The objective of the event was to gather and compare international voices and ideas from institutions, businesses and civil society, ahead of the G20 chaired by Italy. On that occasion, the promotion of gender equality is a the core of the countries’ agenda and will be addressed in targeted manner, thanks to the Ministerial Level Conference on Women’s Empowerment to be held on August 26, 2021 in Santa Margherita Ligure.

“The policy guidelines that we heard today and that will underpin the debate of the G20 Ministerial Level Conference on Women’s Empowerment point to the need for countries to adopt a coherent and overarching framework of policies and measures that can effectively support women’s talent and leadership: a real strategy for gender equality, promoted by governments and supported by international organizations, which will have businesses, social partners, associations and the whole civil society as active protagonists,” commented Minister Elena Bonetti.

The event, chaired by Minister Bonetti, was also attended by the European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova, National Women’s Institute President Nadine Gasman Zylbermann, Generation Equality Forum Secretary General Delphine O, UNWomen Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Senator Valeria Valente, Chair of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Femicide, and the Honorable Maria Edera Spadoni, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies.

The event, moderated by journalist Rula Jebreal, also featured two thematic panels on the demands of civil society, introduced by Linda Laura Sabbadini, President of Women20, and on the role of business, introduced by Paola Mascaro, President of G20 Empower.

“There is an urgent need for decisive action to promote the empowerment of women and girls and to prevent and combat all forms of violence against them. Recovery from the pandemic, in order to be an integral recovery of every sphere of life – health, economic, social and cultural – will have to pivot on the value of women and the full enhancement of their talents,” the Minister concluded.
