On World Oceans Day, millions of people around the world come together to celebrate the ocean that unites us all, taking concrete action to protect it.
The sea produces more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs a third of the carbon dioxide we produce, and is the great regulator of the climate. The water cycle begins with evaporation into mini particles that become clouds and rain, to then enter the earth and become springs, rivers, lakes, the immense arteries of our planet. A real work of magic!
The sea is a place of peace, contemplation, a place to reconnect with nature, to build unforgettable memories. But this place is in danger.
Sea biodiversity is under attack everywhere: we risk losing forever a balance achieved over 4 billion years which has allowed our species to feed, breathe, reproduce, in short, to live on Earth.
The real danger is that by 2050 we will lose a million species, but we don’t know which ones. Even more serious is that we don’t know which ones have already become extinct. Yet our survival is inextricably linked to the natural systems that support the entire architecture of life. From tiny plankton to large whales, we are all interconnected: plant beings, animals, minerals, air and water.
This is why we must intervene before it is too late. Only if we join forces can we make a difference! This is also what the United Nations says, by dedicating this year’s World Oceans Day to the theme of Revitalization, “collective actions for the oceans”. Only through everyone’s actions can we find the right energy to move forward.
Thanks for what you will do. Our future depends on the health of the sea… and the health of the sea depends on us. Happy World Oceans Day!
