Italy’s National Day and its 70th Anniversary at the United Nations were celebrated at an event organized at the UN Headquarters by the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations with the participation of Secretary-General Guterres’ Chief of Staff Amb. Courtenay Rattray and more than 500 guests including over 200 Italian officials working at the United Nations.
“We are here today, in addition to commemorating National Day, to celebrate a double anniversary of great importance: the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 70th Anniversary of Italy’s membership in the UN. Despite the difficulties the UN is going through, the UN Charter remains the only legitimate and universal Habeas Corpus that guarantees equality among people and among states – large and small – as well as their sovereignty and independence,” Ambassador Massari stressed in his opening remarks.
Italy’s admission to the United Nations on December 14, 1955, marked a significant moment in the rehabilitation and reintegration of our country into the international community after the war. Over these 70 years, Italy has played an important role in the life of the organization, examples of which include Italy’s seven mandates on the Security Council.
The Ambassador then pointed out that 2025 is recording the highest number of conflicts since World War II, with all their dramatic consequences for civilians, especially women and children: “We appeal to the sense of humanity of all parties to these conflicts, spare innocent civilians.” Amb.Massari went on to highlight how “the UN belongs to all of us, but it does not run on autopilot. Therefore, we must continue together to defend the UN Charter and its principles. The UN can count on Europe, a true actor in multilateralism.”
The Ambassador extended thanks to all those who support the UN architecture with their efforts, such as the Italian officials at the UN and peacekeepers in fragile post-conflict theaters.
The evening was enriched by performances by Italian-American tenor Christopher Macchio, pianist Cristiana Pegoraro, and the International American Ballet Company, with four dances paired with the sustainable artworks: “Nature Dances”, by painter Alessandra Mattanza (displayed during the event).
