Statement of Italy at the Second Meeting of the High Level Political Forum on “SDG 3 and interlinkages with other SDGs – Healthy lives”

14 LUGLIO_(2nd meeting) HLPF 2025

Italy is pleased to join today’s discussion on SDG 3 and its links with other Goals. We thank the organizers for this timely and important exchange.

While we have made progress, major challenges remain. Noncommunicable diseases, mental health issues, inequalities, and climate-related health risks continue to impact our societies. To move forward, we need integrated and multisectoral solutions.

First, prevention must be a top priority. Health depends not only on services, but also on our daily habits—how we live, eat, move, and learn. Italy promotes healthy lifestyles based on education, balanced and sustainable diets, and physical activity. A good example is the Mediterranean Diet—recognized by UNESCO and supported by scientific evidence—as a way to improve both health and environmental sustainability. These connections between food, health, and sustainability will also guide our contribution to the upcoming UN Food Systems Stocktaking Moment (+4), which Italy will co-host with Ethiopia in Addis Ababa later this month.

Second, we believe innovation can make a difference. During our G7 Presidency, we launched a common vision for the use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, focusing on equity, transparency, and human oversight. When used responsibly, AI can help with early diagnosis, better care, and smarter use of resources.

Third, strong partnerships and national ownership are essential. Italy supports inclusive approaches that involve all sectors of society, including the private sector. In the ongoing NCD negotiations, we are calling for solutions that are science-based, culturally respectful, and that fully respect the right of each country to define its own public health strategies.

Let us work together to put health at the center of sustainable development.

Thank you
