Press Release – Meeting between Permanent Representative Giorgio Marrapodi and President of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock

Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, had his first official meeting today with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.

Ambassador Marrapodi congratulated PGA Baerbock on her dynamic presidency and voiced Italy’s sustained commitment to contributing to improving the United Nations system’s functioning, also within the framework of the UN80 Initiative.

During the meeting, President Baerbock congratulated Italy on the adoption of the resolution on the Olympic Truce that our country had proposed and that the General Assembly adopted by consensus with 165 co-sponsors on November 19, 2025. Furthermore, President Baerbock confirmed her participation in the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, that will take place on February 6 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan.

The same day, Ambassador Marrapodi participated in the UNGA Plenary convened at the UN Headquarters by President Baerbock to read the official UN appeal to end conflicts in observance of the Olympic Truce tradition, due to start today, January 30.

In her address to the membership at the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly emphasized, among other things, that the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games will be the ones with the highest female participation ever recorded.
