PRESS RELEASE
As part of a series of events to celebrate the International Day of Awareness on Food Waste and Loss (29 September), Italy, in its capacity as President of the UN Group of Friends for Food Security and Nutrition, has started a collaboration with FAO and UNEP (UN Environmental Protection Programme) for a day of volunteering at the Harlem Refettorio in New York. Volunteers from various member states of the Group of Friends (which includes over 50 countries from all continents) participated in the event. The initiative is an offspring Chef Massimo Bottura’s broader “Refettori” campaign, to offer nutritious meals to the less well-off and the most vulnerable using food surplus that would otherwise go to waste. Last September Massimo Bottura, former UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, joined the “SDG Advocate Group”, a group of international leaders and influencers appointed by UN Secretary General Guterres to amplify knowledge and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
