PRESS RELEASE: WEEK OF ITALIAN CUISINE IN THE WORLD CELEBRATED AT THE UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK, ANNOUNCED THE UPCOMING UN RESOLUTION FOR AN INTERNATIONAL MEDITERRANEAN DIET DAY

In the context of the ninth Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, Italy hosted a conference at the UN titled “Mediterranean Diet – A living Heritage, Unleashing One Health”, together with Morocco, one of the countries that worked with the Italy in 2010 for the recognition of the Mediterranean diet as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and at the presence of over 40 UN Member States and Representatives of UN entities including FAO, WFP, IFAD, UNEP.

The Conference, organized together with the Future Food Institute, the Municipality of Pollica (UNESCO Emblematic Community for Italy) and the Angelo Vassallo Mediterranean Diet Study Center, was opened by a video messages from Minister Lollobrigida and the FAO Deputy Director General  Maurizio Martina.

During the conference, the Permanent Representative Amb. Maurizio Massari and Morocco’s Chargé d’Affaires at the United Nations Majda Moutchou announced Italy and Morocco’s plan to present a UN Resolution establishing the World Mediterranean Diet Day, a new important moment to promote the Diet and its values ​​at international level.

“The Mediterranean diet has an environmental footprint lower than many other diets, and it is no coincidence that it is our ally in accelerating the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030” remarked Ambassador Massari. “In the face of challenges such as climate change, urbanization and global health concerns, the Mediterranean Diet stands as a model for the entire world. It is this model that inspires Italy’s action in the field of nutrition at multilateral level. This is confirmed by the Apulia Food Systems Initiative in the context of our G7 Presidency and by the work Italy has been carrying out at the UN also in its capacity as President of the Group of Friends of Food Security and Nutrition at the United Nations, counting over 50 member countries from around the world ,” underscored Amb. Massari.

Several experts from the world of culture, agriculture, medicine and scientific research took the floor, including: Luigi Petrillo (President of the Board of World Experts of the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage); Lisa Sasson (Associate Provost at New York University); Elisabetta Moro (Director of MedeatResearch); Richard McCurthy (World Farmers Coalition); Alessio Fasano (Harvard Medical School and Professor of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health); Roberto Vicinanza (Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California). The conference also featured a message from the Mayor of Pollica Stefano Pisani and the Mayor of Chefchaouen Mohamed Sefiani (UNESCO Emblematic Community for the Mediterranean Diet in Morocco). Also the youngster shared their experience, with Eugenio Russo of the Paideia Campus and “Barbascura”, influencer and climate activist, and brought in their perspective on how to pass on the values ​​of a sustainable lifestyle to future generations. The conference was followed by a tasting of Mediterranean products organized at theUNHQ for around 150 guests.
