National Statement by Minister for Disabilities Alessandra Locatelli at UN General Assembly Plenary of COSP18

Loc 2

Dear President and distinguished delegates,

I’m very honored to be here with all of you again. Today I have three points to highlight to work on from now and for the future:

1.We can invest in the value of each person. I’m convinced that this is the right way: investing as institutions and private sector to promote the talents and skills of everybody and above all leave no one behind.

2.The first G7 on Inclusion and disability with its final document, the Solfagnano Charter, was a great opportunity to enhance valorization and to have a new vision. And this is a new fight for every country in the world, for all of us to move with responsibility and go on.

This is why I want to thank the South African Minister Chikunga for her commitment to host the first G20 Ministerial Forum on disability and Italy will be there!

It’s time to pay attention to every point that concerns persons, to change perspectives and to reverse priorities, in particular in relation to children and adolescents.

Nothing is possible, nothing is necessary unless we take care of the person. My dear Colleagues, dear all. I’m convinced that we must be present at every meeting at every level: to talk about valorization, to talk about universal accessibility, to talk about new technologies and artificial intelligence, to talk about sports and recreational life, to talk about protection in case of humanitarian crises, climate change and conflicts. Because all of this concerns people!

3. I have one last point, this is about the media. They must communicate more and more about the wonderful job that persons with disabilities do every day, about caregivers, about families, about associations, about potential, about great projects and good practices.

The media must help us communicate better, with the right language and right perspective. We must do it together, for the social development of every country. We are all in the same world!! And we have a great responsibility to act now!

I want to conclude by saying that history is made by heroes, history talks about people that want to change things, people who are convinced that nothing is impossible, people who use their strengths to serve others, people who are exhausted but do not give up, people who never give up.

This is the beginning of our history and history must continue. And we can write history together!
