On the occasion of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week, on 1 July Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, visited the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero.

“The memory of the brutal attack on the Twin Towers compels us to work with even greater determination at the international and multilateral levels to protect the shared framework of values founded on the principles of freedom and peaceful coexistence among peoples,” the Ambassador stated during the wreath-laying ceremony held to pay tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, whose 25th anniversary is being commemorated this year.

Ambassador Marrapodi highlighted the Italian Government’s commitment to promoting international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the initiatives advanced by Italy at the United Nations Headquarters aimed at fostering international strategies to combat terrorism and transnational crime.

One of the main events organized by Italy during the week, featuring remarks by Hon. Emanuele Loperfido, Vice-Chair of the OSCE Parliamentary Committee, examined the impact of artificial intelligence and technological sovereignty on counter-terrorism strategies. The event explored the role of parliaments in adapting and implementing existing legal and regulatory frameworks to address the new challenges posed by technological innovation.

The Italian delegation participating in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week includes four members of the Strategic Anti-Terrorism Analysis Committee (CASA) of the Ministry of the Interior, senior officials of the State Police, and high-ranking officers of the Guardia di Finanza and of the Carabinieri Corps, supported by staff from Italy’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
