Statement by Italy’s Permanent Representative Amb. Maurizio Massari at Secretary-General Briefing on the report “Our Common Agenda”

PR OCA

Thank you Mr. President and thank you, Secretary-General, for this timely overview and update on the processes and initiatives related to “Our Common Agenda”.

Italy aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union and wishes to add the following remarks in its national capacity.

Following the momentous High-Level Week of the General Assembly and its meaningful outcomes, we are called to further accelerate our efforts to deliver on our collective promises, also in view of the summit of the future.

We continue to support you, Mr. Secretary General, and your calls to galvanize multilateral action to leave no one behind and we welcome your progress report.

Let me briefly focus on three specific points.

First the new agenda for peace. Italy fully supports your vision, Mr. Secretary General, of a “New Agenda for Peace” based on conflict prevention, strategic risk reductions, regional prevention and significant investments in peacebuilding also through assessed contributions, putting women and girls at the core of security policies.

Second, the Food Systems Transformations.

We also welcome the priority maintained on food systems transformations, in line with the outcomes of the Rome Summit last July and the launch of your Call to Action and of the High Impact Initiative as part of the six key transitions.

Third, Global Governance. Strengthening Global Governance, including the reform of the collective security system and the International Financial Institutions, also remains a top priority for Italy.  We need a system that can be perceived as really inclusive and legitimate by all the UN membership, and that remains adaptive to the inevitable changes in the international situation. We are ready to progress towards a reform of the UN Security Council, to be properly carried out within the Intergovernmental Negotiation (IGN).

We have ahead of us a long and comprehensive processes. In order to succeed, it is crucial to find collective solutions to shared problems and to redouble our efforts in bridging sides and reducing gaps.

You can continue to count on Italy.

I thank you.
