Madame Chair,
Thank you for the floor.
Of course, we are in support of any action against violence against women and, of course, for a total gender equality and balance everywhere in the world and in our country.
Here, I would like to make a special reference to the report on violence against women and girls in sports. Special Rapporteur Alsalem’s work hat sheds a much needed light on the unacceptable levels of violence faced by women athletes and on all the critical challenges faced by women and girls in sports, where safety, equality and fairness must be paramount.
Italy welcomes the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur, particularly those highlighting the urgent need for all relevant stakeholders to take stronger measures to ensure that women and girls can compete in a fair and supportive environment without being discriminated.
We recognize the importance of fair sport competitions for women and girls, regulated on the basis of shared, transparent and scientifically-based standards.
Indeed, in line with the report of rapporteur Alsalem, we are strongly convinced that when sport competitions are safe and fair for women and girls, they become powerful platforms for building confidence, breaking stereotypes, and empowering them to reach their full potentials.
Italy reiterates its full support for the mandate of the Special Rapporteur Alsame and ongoing efforts to prevent and address violence against women and girls also in this important sector.
Thank you, Madame Chair.
