Dichiarazione dell’Italia alla seduta plenaria della Terza Commissione sul punto 108 dell’ordine del giorno “Prevenzione del crimine e giustizia penale”

Thank you, Madam Chair.

Italy aligns itself with the statement that will be delivered by the European Union. I would like to add some consideration on my national capacity.

First of all, we wish to thank Ms Welsch for her instructive briefing today on the activities of UNODC over the last year. Italy has been, is and will always be among the strongest supporters with the activities of UNODC.

On our side we would like to underline the importance of the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of the Palermo Convention – a treaty instrument which – building on the vision of enlightened pathfinders such as Judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino – has become nearly universal and has grounded increasing international efforts in tackling transnational organized crime. In this respect, we would like to ask the briefer about the vision and plans of UNODC in supporting Member States in the implementation of the Convention and its Protocols in the next years.

Finally, let me share the information that by tomorrow Italy will submit the s.c. “omnibus crime resolution” – which since 2023 has become a biannual resolution and that in this year is characterized by a streamlining exercise aimed at eliminating obsolete and redundant paragraphs, while incorporating the most important developments, including the activities of the CCPCJ in Vienna.

Our delegation stands ready to engage with all delegations.

I thank you.
