Italy at UNGASS 2016: How to Include Gender Perspectives in Drug Policies

On Wednesday April 20, 2016, the Permanent Missions of Italy, Chile and Peru, together with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will co-host a high-level event on the margins of UNGASS 2016 on “Drug Use and Women: Best Practices in the Design and Implementation of Programs and Public Policies for Prevention and Treatment with a Gender Approach.”

The event will take place at UN headquarters in New York and will see the participation of Italian Minister of Justice, the Hon. Andrea Orlando, who will discuss the importance of incorporating gender perspectives in drug policies.

Years of research have established a clear consensus regarding the fact that men and women engage differently in the use of drugs. The same scientific evidence tends to show that women are exposed to a higher social stigma compared to male users, a reality that poses a number of considerations when designing and implementing drug treatment programs.

It is with these considerations in mind that the event will take place, on the sidelines of the Special Session of the General Assembly on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS 2016). The event will gather experts and policymakers to discuss and exchange best practices on how to effectively include gender considerations in drug policies around the world.
