Italy Leads Football Coaching Workshops in Barbados

As recognized by Agenda 2030, sport has always been an important driver of peace and development for nations. Football in particular is a universal sport that is played in every corner of the globe, and for decades has never ceased to attract and excite fans. Its simplicity makes it one of the most widespread and democratic sports, cutting across classes of every population. Its positive social impact can be seen as early as in elementary school years. Football is Italy’s national sport, especially considering that Italy has won the World Cup four times and that Italian football clubs have achieved many international successes.

For CARICOM countries, football is one of the sports most passionately followed, with a particular interest in European championships, and national Caribbean teams are regularly represented in international competitions. For these reasons, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, the National Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have launched a joint regional initiative to benefit the countries of the Caribbean. Drawing on the experience and professionalism of Italian coaches, this initiative contributes to further enhancing the football skills of the national teams of CARICOM states. The workshop in Barbados is the next step of Italy’s regional football initiative, after the two sucessful training workshops in Antigua and Barbuda and in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines offered last May to a total of nine CARICOM countries.

Starting today, Italian coach Renzo Ulivieri, who is the President of the Italian Association of Football Coaches, is teaching a workshop for the national coaches and the Under-17 players of Barbados, in sports facilities made available by the Barbadian Government.
