The HLPF has just kicked-off at the UN in New York and it will run until July 17.
Why is it important?
The HLPF – or High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development – is the main UN platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The theme of this year is “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions
Italy is participating to HLPF with a Ministerial delegation and is organizing several side-events on its margins.
This year, the Forum will focus on 5 SDGs that will be under review:
The SDG 1 on Ending Poverty;
The SDG 2 on Zero Hunger;
The SDG 13 on Climate Action;
The SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions;
The SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
Two will be the side-events co-organized by Italy: the first one with UNDP on Climate Ambition in an Age of Polarization; the second one with UN Global Compact and with the involvement of private companies, on the topic of Transformational Governance as a driver of responsible business.
As chair of the Group of Friends of Food Security at the UN, and host country of the UN agri-food hub in Rome, Italy is on the frontline of the UN action for Zero Hunger and will take the floor at the dedicated session of HLPF.
Italy will also speak at the session on Small Island Developing Countries, following the important SIDS Conference last May co-financed by Italy, also a Vice-Chair of the Conference. Italy is a longstanding partner of SIDS countries, which stand out, among other, due to their vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters.
In this context, Italy is also organizing two meetings of the donor countries of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and of the International Atomic Energy Agency, of which our country is among the major donors and partners.
Italy will also brief Member States at the session dedicated to the SDG16, following the SDG 16 High Level Conference organized at the UN in New York on last May 6 in cooperation with DESA and IDLO, and opened by the President of the Italian Republic H.E. Sergio Mattarella.
Finally, Italy will intervene at the HLPF session dedicated to African countries, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries, also in connection with the priority placed on Africa by the current Italian G7 Presidency.
On the sidelines of HLPF, the Italian Government will sign some MoUs with UN entities and with developing countries for concrete deliverables and joint projects on environmental protection.
Stay tuned for more insights on our action.
