From January to today, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN has supported the participation of approximately 10,000 students of international subjects, from Italy and from numerous regions of the world, in the UN negotiation simulations (so-called “MUN”, Model United Nations), in collaboration with various specialized Italian associations and bodies. This is an unprecedented result, which makes Italy the UN Member State with the highest number of activities of this type promoted and implemented within the United Nations, in line with the traditional Italian commitment to youth leadership and to the “Youth, Peace and Security” Agenda.
“We are very proud of these figures,” commented Ambassador Massari. “It is always exciting to see the United Nations General Assembly packed with young people who dream of a diplomatic career or of working in International Organizations. Thanks to these activities, we allow thousands of students every year to be on the front-row of multilateralism and to understand its workings, spreading a culture of dialogue and understanding between peoples. The future of diplomacy and peace belongs to the new generations, this is why it is imperative that we listen to their voice.”
During their work at the United Nations, the students have come into contact with numerous UN leaders and representatives, and they have refined their skills on several concrete issues that build the remit of various UN bodies, from conflict prevention, human rights’ protection, humanitarian and emergency aid to sustainable development.
