Statement of Italy at Informal Interactive Dialogue on the 2025 Review of the Peacebuilding Architecture – Joint meeting of the General Assembly and Social Council – General Assembly, 79th session

DPR

Thank you Mr Chair, Thank you to the co-facilitators,

Italy aligns itself to the statement delivered by the European Union .

Italy is confident that the membership will seize the opportunity coming from the Peacebuilding Architecture Review to raise the effectiveness of UN Peacebuilding to a new level.

Notably, we hope consensus can be built starting from the elements paper that was kindly provided by the co-facilitators on the following issues:

– The universality and centrality of conflict prevention, which is a shared responsibility;

– The need to develop “national prevention strategies”, on a voluntary basis and respecting the national ownership of Member States;

– The need for a systemic effort by all the branches of the United Nations to ensure coherent support to peacebuilding;

– The importance of mobilizing more funds, including private ones;

– The need to anchor all steps of the peacebuilding process to respect for human rights;

– The importance of always keeping the peace-climate-security nexus and the full implementation of the WPS and YPS agendas on the forefront of peacebuilding activities;

– The importance of increasing synergies for peacebuilding between the United Nations and regional organizations;

– The merit of increasing coordination between the Peacebuilding Commission, United Nations Resident Coordinators and the Commanders of Peacekeeping Operations.

Today’s meeting takes place one week before the Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping scheduled in Berlin, ideally reminding us the close link between peacebuilding and peacekeeping.

The effective integration of these two dimensions is and will be increasingly essential to support the “peace continuum”, taking into account the ongoing debate on peacekeeping adaptation.

Italy will continue to dedicate its best efforts, resources and commitment to both dimensions – peacebuilding and peacekeeping.

Thank you.
