SG Mulet, Excellencies (Egyptian and Ethiopian Ambassadors), Ambassador Hirsch from IPI, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us here today to discuss the topic of Enhancing Partnerships in Peacekeeping Operations.
Peacekeeping Operations have evolved to adapt and adjust to increasingly hostile environments, emergence of asymmetric threats and complex operational challenges that require a comprehensive, multidimensional approach and credible response mechanisms to maintain and restore peace. Peacekeeping as global partnership brings together the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat, Troop, Police and Technology Contributors, and Regional Organizations as relevant.
A reinforced and effective partnership among actors belonging to different regions and, thus, Regional Organizations, represents a pillar for future successful peacekeeping operations.
Italy, Egypt, and Ethiopia are carrying out a common effort in the wider Mediterranean region to strengthen such partnership. As we speak, there are at least 8 theatres, mainly in Africa, where EU and UN missions are concurrently deployed: a reinforced cooperation between International and Regional Organization is therefore a must.
This roundtable discussion will provide an opportunity to better understand the perspectives of member states with regard to UN Partnerships with Regional Organizations on a focused range of issues: from capacity building to financing, support and logistics for regional actors for their effective participation in Peace Operations.
