DISCORSO PRONUNCIATO DALL’AMBASCIATORE SEBASTIANO CARDI, RAPPRESENTANTE PERMANENTE DELL’ITALIA PRESSO LE NAZIONI UNITE, ALLA COMMEMORAZIONE DEL 70MO ANNIVERSARIO DELLA CARTA DELLE NAZIONI UNITE (23 ottobre 2015)

Mr. President,

I join others in thanking you for today’s initiative to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter, whose values and principles are today as relevant as they were 70 years ago.

Addressing the General Assembly in September, the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stressed the belief that, after 70 years, this Organization has “the wisdom to recognize its mistakes and the strength to correct them, writing a new page and assuring a better future for your children, for our children.”

Italy strongly believes in this and will spare no effort in its contribution to uphold the principles and values of the Charter.

We will work with other Member States through the ongoing reform processes, bearing in mind the call for a more transparent and inclusive Organization, and making sure the UN is fit for today’s agenda.

Mr. President,

Last week, addressing the Italian Parliament in Rome, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon called for global solidarity to address the security, peace, social and humanitarian challenges confronting us. These challenges, he stressed, cannot be tackled by a single Nation or by a single Organization alone. They call for global support. 60 years after Italy joined the United Nations, rest assured of our commitment to achieving our common goals. I thank you.
