Explanation of Vote by Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and President of the Security Council, at the Security Council meeting on the renewal of the mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) —
Italy supported the resolution put forward by Japan and wishes to thank the Japanese delegation for its effort.
We have already stated many times, including yesterday in this chamber, the important we attached to the global non-proliferation architecture and to the need to ensure accountability for violation of its norm.
The JIM is a crucial tool in this respect and we are not ready to simply accept that the existence of this mechanism is over.
We are, once again, disappointed for the result of the vote, we have until midnight if there is even the slightest chance by then to renew the mandate we will contribute constructively to grasp that last chance.
Otherwise we will continue working on this issue, striving to find agreement on an issue of crucial importance for all of us and fulfilling the responsibility of this council.
Italy also supports the proposal of Sweden.
