High-level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Response in the Horn of Africa

Wednesday 24 May

Statement of Italy delivered by the Deputy Foreign Minister, H.E. Edmondo Cirielli

Excellences,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear Colleagues,

We have come to the end of this important conference. As we have seen in today’s interventions, the Horn of Africa is facing a serious crisis and we need to respond actively. The severe drought that affects the region is compounded by insecurity, high food prices and worsening health conditions. If we do not act now, the current number of food insecure people – estimated at around 20 million – is set to rise even further.

Today’s conference has been a renewed commitment of the international community to the Horn of Africa. It is clear that only by adopting a coordinated and multidimensional approach we can effectively respond to such a severe humanitarian crisis. This is a challenge that we must address together. We must join our efforts to ensure long-lasting solutions: while alleviating human suffering we need to start tackling the underlying factors that are fueling the emergency in the Horn of Africa.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the stakeholders that announced their financial commitments for the humanitarian response in the region in 2023. I would also like to thank all of you that are here today, both in presence and virtually, for attending this conference and help raising international awareness on the gravity of the ongoing crisis. Let us continue to work together to mobilize the necessary funds and coordinate our efforts in order to pave the way for long-term development.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me conclude by thanking the Governments of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Qatar and OCHA for organizing with us this conference. I would also like to extend a special thanks to the Representatives of the Governments of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia for intervening today. No solution can be truly successful if we do not ensure that the main stakeholders are involved at every step of the way.

It is my sincere hope that the fruitful discussions that we had today will help maintaining the Horn of Africa emergency high in the international agenda and will lead to an effective international response to the needs of the most affected people.

Thank you very much.
