General Assembly – Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace

Statement delivered by Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, at the General Assembly Meeting on the Secretary-General’s Report on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace —

Italy aligns itself to the statement delivered by the European Union (and by Mexico as Chair of the Group of Friends on sustaining peace) and agrees with the statement of the Netherlands, in the spirit of the split term.
Italy welcomes the Report of the Secretary General and commends his remarkable efforts on this crucial issue.
We reaffirm our strong commitment to continue supporting the Secretary General and to contribute giving substance to his recommendations, linking prevention and mediation, respect for human rights and development, in a unified vision for security and economic and social growth.

Italy looks forward to the High Level meeting organized by the President of General Assembly in April to establish a concrete road map to that effect.

We hope that the meeting will result in a strong outcome, (such as a resolution), which will give the opportunity to the Member States to enhance their engagement on this process, in the perspective of the Peacebuilding Architecture Review in 2020.

Giving substance to the Sustaining Peace agenda means looking in a thoughtful way at the future of the UN. In this sense, Italy would also like to reiterate its full support to the UN reform projects presented by the Secretary General whose implementation we see – intimately connected to the realization of the Sustaining Peace Agenda.

The United Nations’ capacity is unparalleled and must be fully exploited by improving synergy and coordination among all UN actors at Headquarters and on the ground. As a member of the Peacebuilding Commission, to which we have returned and to which we have increased our contribution, we also welcome the important role the Commission and the PBSO are called to play in the sustaining peace.

Finally we consider the focus on prevention, especially through an enhanced role of regional organizations and partners, as key to this strategy, and our success.

I thank you
