G.A. Debate on the Report of the Peacebuilding Commission

Statement delivered on by Ambassador Inigo Lambertini, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, at the General Assembly Debate on the Report of the Peacebuilding Commission —

Señor Presidente,

at the outset I want to thank you and the PGA for having convened this debate dedicated to the Report of the Peacebuilding Commission on its eleventh session and to the latest Report of the Secretary-General on the Peacebuilding Fund.

The two reports demonstrate once again the key role the Peacebuilding Commission and the related Fund play within the United Nations system, thanks to their convening and bridging functions between the different dimensions of the UN entities and activities, as well as to their capacity to integrate a country-specific approach with regional and cross-cutting perspectives.

As a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2017, we had the opportunity to witness the important added value of the Commission and its significant contribution to the daily work of the Security Council. This has also been possible thanks to Ambassador Tcho, whose leadership Italy would like to commend. In the same vein we would express our sincere appreciation to the current Chair, Ambassador Jinga, and, as current member of the Commission, Italy confirms its full support to him in accomplishing all the objectives of his mandate.

At the same time, the PBF has proven to be an unparalleled tool in addressing multiple challenges in a rapid and meaningful way and for this reason Italy increased its financial contribution to the Fund in the last two years.

Señor Presidente,

last month, during the high-level meeting on Peacebuilding and sustaining peace, the strengthening of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peace Building Fund has been repeatedly referred to as an essential factor to realize the peace continuum enshrined in the concept of sustaining peace.

Italy reaffirms its strong support to the Secretary-General efforts towards putting into practice his vision on the sustaining peace, linking prevention and mediation, promotion of and respect for human rights and development, in a coherent and comprehensive vision for peace, security, economic and social growth. We also stress the need for predictable and sustainable financing of the Sustaining Peace agenda.

Italy would like to also welcome the important role the Commission and the PBSO are called to play in the implementation of sustaining peace agenda.

Agradecemos mucho señor Presidente.
