Press Release – UN/ITALY. ITALY and UNWOMEN sign agreement for the Italian contribution of 3,5 mln euros to the program in Central America

New York, 7 June 2018. Italy and UNWOMEN signed today at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York an agreement ratifying the Italian contribution of 3,5 mln euros to the program “Economic empowerment of women in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.”

The UNWOMEN project aims at improving economic governance by achieving gender equality and women’s inclusion in socio-economic processes at local, national and regional level. Italian funds will support capacity building activities to improve the response to major development challenges in Central America – increasing inequalities, unemployment, strain on natural resources, impact of climate change – through a gender and community focused approach.

The contribution of the Italian Development Cooperation to this program attests to the close cooperation established with UNWOMEN, which has received increasing financial support from Italy, exceeding more than 6,5 mln euros in 2017 alone, for programs and activities targeted to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

“Our contribution to this UNWOMEN project in Central America is a testament to the Italian longstanding engagement in this region and support for UN Programs and Funds, with the aim to strengthen stable, prosperous and inclusive societies. The effective participation of women in development processes, conflict prevention and solution, peacebuilding and sustaining peace is crucial to reach this goal.” said Ambassador Inigo Lambertini, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN, at the signature ceremony.
