PRESS RELEASE – Italy Elected by Acclamation to the UN Peacebuilding Commission for 2023-2024

PEACEBUILDING

PRESS RELEASE

New York, 21 July 2022. With 31 Member States, the Peacebuilding Commission is the UN body committed to peace efforts in Countries affected by conflict, working to reduce risks of outbreak or resumption of hostilities and to build lasting – not only temporary – peace. Italy will thus be among the Countries on the frontline aiming to strengthen the rule of law, promote the consolidation of institutions, the respect of human rights, gender equality, and social inclusiveness in different theaters of operation in the world. “The many crises we are witnessing throughout the world confirm the importance and value of preventive diplomacy, for which the Peacebuilding Commission serves as the interpreter,” commented Ambassador Maurizio Massari, Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN. The Commission is strategic, closely cooperating with the General Assembly and the Security Council. Its action is based on a trans-regional approach, open to the participation of external actors. Italy, elected today together with Denmark, Brazil and Nigeria, returns to the Peacebuilding Commission after concluding its 2018 mandate. More recently, the Countries/regions that this body has mainly attended to are Burkina Faso, Chad, the Sahel, Central African Republic, the Gambia and Liberia.”
