Statement by Italy

Thank you Madame Chair and Vice President.

Italy wishes to thank the Chairperson of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the Executive Secretary of UN-Nutrition for the presentation of these two informative reports on the respective activities and deliberations. We welcome them.

These two additional reports highlight once again the concerning status of global food security and nutrition in the world. Hunger is on the rise again due to the ongoing multi-dimensional and interconnected crises and their impacts and we call for increased efforts by all actors.

The CFS and UN-Nutrition represent two different entities which provide important contributions to advancing SDG 2.  The Rome-based CFS, with its multi-stakeholder and inclusive nature, develops agreed, comprehensive policy-guidance and recommendations to accelerate food-systems-wide action while UN Nutrition, plays the key role of UN inter-agency coordination mechanism for nutrition, bringing together all the UN entities focused on nutrition and maximizing their cooperation and impact. They are both key entities which connects global and local dimensions and work on both vertical and horizontal cooperation. We encourage them to continue working to maximize tangible and measurable impact and to work in full synergy with all relevant UN actors, governments and stakeholders. Food Security and Nutrition require the coordinated contribution of all relevant actors and should continue to be a key priority area in the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks and the Operational Country Programs.

Italy welcomes the recent developments reported to the Council, including the outcomes of the Ministerial Segment of the CFS, the endorsement of new Voluntary Guidelines and Policy Recommendations and ongoing preparations for new ones, as well as the actions undertaken to advance the UN Nutrition Strategy 2022-2030.

Madame Chair,

In less than 50 days, on July 24-26, our Leaders will gather at the UN Food Systems Summit+2: Stocktaking Moment in Rome, convened by the Secretary General and hosted by Italy, for a global action Summit which aims to identify and leverage actions for food systems transformations towards sustainability, resilience, access, affordability, quality and to address short, medium and long term challenges needed to bring SDG 2 back on track and by doing so leveraging many other SDGs and having a positive impact on peace, planet, prosperity and sustainable development.

We encourage all Member States and the UN System, including the CFS and UN-Nutrition, to engage at the highest level the Summit in Rome and contribute substantially to its success, which will then inform the SDG Summit in September.

You can continue to count on Italy, as host of the Summit, of the UN Rome-based Agencies and Chair of the Group of Friends of Food Security and Nutrition here in New York, to continue promoting action on food security and nutrition.I thank you.
