DISCORSO PRONUNCIATO DALL’AMBASCIATORE SEBASTIANO CARDI, RAPPRESENTANTE PERMANENTE DELL’ITALIA PRESSO LE NAZIONI UNITE, ALLA CERIMONIA INAUGURALE DELLA GIORNATA INTERNAZIONALE DELLE PERSONE DISABILI (3 dicembre 2015)

Mr. Secretary-General, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to join the distinguished list of speakers on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, whose importance could not be stated in greater terms.

As you all well know, Italy really places a very high premium on safeguarding and promoting the rights of people with disabilities, be them physical or mental, and in a holistic, multidimensional approach, including e. g. empowering their ambitions and career paths, rendering working environments more suitable to them, raising awareness.

In this goal, we feel even more privileged and responsible as we are currently holding the position of Vice-Chair of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2015-16.

A clear sign of the importance we assign to this issue has been our strong commitment – under the leadership of the Republic of Korea and together with other like-minded countries – to put forward the resolution ‘Toward the full realization of an inclusive and accessible United nations for person with disabilities’, which has been adopted per consensus last week by the Third Committee with over 120 co-sponsorships by Member States. This resolution takes a comprehensive stance on the theme of disability, aiming not only at improving infrastructural accessibility of the UN for disabled people, but also at raising awareness on disability’s issues and on its implications, as well as on the actual working contribution of disabled people to the UN. And I believe that such cross-regional initiative perfectly fuels the theme chosen for this year’s International Day: ‘Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all disabilities”.

Please be reassured that Italy stands ready to confirm and increase its engagement in improving rights and conditions of people with disabilities, aware that making significant steps forward would certainly contribute to render the world more fair and inclusive for all. In this regard, we recall the multiple references made to the disability issues inthe Agenda 2030 – in its Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education, Goal 8 on Economic Growth, Goal 10 on Inequalities and Goal 11 on Cities – and look forward to the full attainment of these objectives under this new international development framework.
