Press release – UN General Assembly: actress, singer and activist Sofia Carson and Grammy and Emmy winner, 13-time Oscar nominee and upcoming Honorary Oscar recipient, songwriter Diane Warren join Italy at SDG Action Zone to raise awareness on women’s rights.

PRESS RELEASE

New York, September 23 – UN General Assembly: actress, singer and activist Sofia Carson and Grammy and Emmy winner, 13-time Oscar nominee and upcoming Honorary Oscar recipient, songwriter Diane Warren join Italy at SDG Action Zone to raise awareness on women’s rights.

Italy’s longstanding commitment to promoting gender equality and fighting violence against women within the UN served as a backdrop to the online performance by singer and UNICEF Ambassador and We Do it together – WDIT honorary member, Sofia Carson, and honorary Oscar recipient and WDIT honorary member Diane Warren at the SDG Action Zone (September 21-23). The event, streamed globally, was promoted by the UN under the theme “Three Days To Change The World” and was opened by UN Secretary General Guterres.

The Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN and non-profit We Do It Together founded by Chiara Tilesi joined forces to promote the performance.

The two famous artists reached women around the world with their performance of the song “Applause”, the soundtrack of the Italian movie on women’s rights “Tell It Like A Woman”, created by WDIT to change the narrative on women from object to subject. The movie, which was presented at the Taormina Film Festival in June where it received the “Taormina Excellence Award”, counts on the strong support of the Italian Mission to the UN, which is planning a screening at the UN in March 2023 on International Women’s Day.

“Women and girls’ rights are a top priority of Italy’s foreign policy and multilateral efforts within the UN, which has increasingly focused on engaging with civil society, the youth, and famous artists through the language of public diplomacy to reach the widest possible audience. Italy had to play its part. This initiative is aimed to support the UN in its efforts to bring about real change and improve women’s condition all over the world”, remarked Italy’s Permanent Representative to the UN and International Gender Champion, Ambassador Maurizio Massari.

Henson, Maria Sole Tognazzi, Lucia Puenzo, Lucia Bulgheroni, Silvia Carobbio, Mipo O, Leena Yadav, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Hudson, Marcia Gay Harden, Pauletta Washington, Cara Delevingne, Margherita Buy, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anjali Lama, Anne Watanabe.
