Consiglio di Sicurezza – Briefing su Non-Proliferazione/Iran

Discorso pronunciato dall’Ambasciatore Inigo Lambertini, Vice Rappresentante Permanente dell’Italia presso le Nazioni Unite, al Briefing in Consiglio di Sicurezza su Non-Proliferazione/Iran —

Mr. President,

Italy believes that the international community should continue to take every action to ensure that the JCPoA remains a positive element in the global efforts against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. At the same time, we do believe in the importance of a full and thorough implementation of Resolution 2231. Good faith implementation of both the JCPoA and of the Resolution 2231 will benefit regional security.

In this perspective, we appreciate the SG report, both for its references to the importance of the JCPoA (whose monitoring and verification by the IAEA is essential) and its compliance with all relevant provisions of Resolution 2231. We share the assessment by the Secretary General of the JCPoA as an “achievement of multilateral diplomacy” that all participants should benefit from. We also share his view that the JCPoA provides an example of the benefits of diplomacy leading to the reduction of tensions among States, and wish to reiterate the Secretary General’s call for all Member States and other relevant organizations to support the implementation of this historic agreement.

The robust and comprehensive structure as well as solid verification mechanism of the JCPoA are crucial to uphold mutual trust and the credibility of the Plan. Therefore, Italy will continue to support the IAEA in its tasks regarding the JCPoA. Italy commends the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for her leadership in coordinating the Joint Commission established by the JCPoA.

We encourage all stakeholders to continue to promptly address and resolve any possible issue through dialogue, by exploiting relevant mechanisms set-up by the JCPoA. The Security Council also plays a key role within its competencies and responsibilities, and Italy will continue to do its part, also in its capacity as Security Council Facilitator, to foster the smooth implementation of Resolution 2231.
Thank you.
