Madame President,

Distinguished Delegates,

The Permanent Representative of Uruguay, Ambassador Elbio Rosselli, and myself – in continuation of the action carried out by my predecessor – had the honor to co-facilitate the negotiations of the Political Declaration of the Third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases held in New York on 27th of September.

Let me congratulate you, Madame President, for your successful leadership on that occasion.

Also on behalf of my fellow co-facilitator, I wish to warmly thank all Member States for their active and constructive engagement during the negotiations, which allowed to reach consensus on the text subsequently approved during the High Level Meeting and today reflected in the Resolution that was just adopted.

The result – we can all be proud of – is a concise, balanced and action-oriented document, which builds on the opportunities and challenges in the implementation of previous commitments, and highlights some key concrete areas of action for the achievement of SDG 3.4, such is the importance of healthy lifestyle choices for an effective prevention of NCDs.

I would like to recall, Madame President, that today is World Mental Health Day, and in the text of the Declaration we just approved this issue has been addressed in an extensive and concrete way.

As the NCDs related discussions and activities will continue mostly in Geneva, we are confident that the outcome of our efforts in New York will be able to effectively guide the action of the membership – at the international, national and local levels – in the fights against non-communicable diseases, having in mind the review of the related targets in 2025.

Thank you very much.
